My grandfather started working in the southern California oil fields for Gilmore Oil fresh out of high school, in 1927.  He literally worked his way up from ditch digger to a vice president of a small regional oil company, after retiring from Mobil in 1970.  All told he worked in the oil and gas industry for 70 years, with a brief layover for WWII in the middle.  He absolutely loved it.

I went to an event in the Dallas Petroleum Club.  There were long expanses of wood paneled walls and display cases festooned with pictures from that period and art derived from it, including lots of gorgeous crystals and rock formation samples.  Geography is beautiful.
